VERNAL — A 47-year-old Vernal woman was killed Saturday when the ATV she was riding flipped over backward on a steep incline near the Iron Springs Campground in Ashley National Forest.
About 1 p.m. Saturday, the woman was riding an ATV with her 15-year-old daughter on the back when the ATV flipped, said Utah State Parks officer Jeff Steele. The woman, who was not wearing a helmet, died at the scene. Her name was not released Sunday.
The teenage girl, who was wearing a helmet, was airlifted to Ashley Regional Medical Center. Her injuries do not appear to be life-threatening, Steele said.
The woman and her daughter were riding with a group of family and friends when the accident occurred, he said. Because of the difficult terrain, it took paramedics about 45 minutes to reach the group.
"Her husband sat there the whole time with her," Steele said.
The Iron Springs Campground is about 25 miles north of Vernal. It's a popular area for riding ATVs in the summer, he said.
