SALT LAKE CITY — More homeowners are choosing to remodel instead of buying a newer home so they can save money, according to MarketWatch.

The number of remodeling bid requests has risen 61 percent this year, the National Association of the Remodeling Industry reported to MarketWatch.

"Remodeling is coming back in large part because homeowners are finding it's much more economical to upgrade or repair or expand their existing home than sell and buy new," Cheryl Reed, spokeswoman for Angie's List, a network for consumers searching for service companies, told MarketWatch.

Avoiding common mistakes like not signing a contract and waiting until the weather is warmer could end up saving homeowners more money, the MarketWatch article reports.

"There's demand out there, but consumers are still in the driver's seat when getting this work done," Reed said.
