Utah State track and field senior pole vaulter Sonia Grabowska was named the Verizon Western Athletic Conference Women's Outdoor Field Athlete of the Week for the week of April 23-29, as announced by the league office Tuesday.
It is the second career WAC Outdoor Field Athlete of the Week honor for Grabowska (April 13, 2009), and the fourth overall as she has also received the WAC Indoor Field Athlete of the Week honor twice (Jan. 20, 2009, and Jan. 25, 2011).
Grabowska was also named the America First Credit Union Utah State Student-Athlete of the Week for the period ending Sunday, April 29. It is the first time this year and third time in her career that she has received the USU student-athlete of the week honors.
A native of Warsaw, Poland, Grabowska won the pole vault at the BYU Robison Invitational this past weekend, tying her season-best height of 4.12m (13-06.25). Her mark is currently ranked first in the WAC and 27th in the nation in the event so far this season.
This also marks the seventh time in 2012 that an Aggie has been named a WAC Outdoor Track and Field Athlete of the Week, as senior Lindsey Spencer was named the WAC Outdoor Field Athlete of the Week for the weeks of March 12-18, April 9-15 and April 16-22, respectively.
Seniors Daniel Howell and Hunter Nelson were also named the WAC Men's Track Athletes of the Week for April 2-8 and March 12-18, respectively, while sophomore Kyle McKenna also earned the honor for the week of March 19-25. Additionally, three Aggies received the accolade during the 2012 indoor season, including sophomores Chari Hawkins and Kylie Hirschi, as well as senior Spela Hus.
Utah State's outdoor track and field teams will continue their 2012 season next week as they travel to Moscow, Idaho, to compete in the Western Athletic Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships at the Dan O'Brien Track & Field Complex from Tuesday, May 8, through Friday, May 11. The USU men have won the last three outdoor WAC titles, while the Aggie women placed second at last year's Outdoor WAC Championships.
