CEDAR CITY — A 25-year-old man accused of killing a 14-month-old child in his care was ordered to prison Tuesday.

Thomas Harry Canum III was sentenced to one to 15 years in prison for child abuse homicide, a second-degree felony. Fifth District Judge Michael Westfall also ordered the man to pay $11,578 in restitution and a $1,033 fine.

Canum was charged in connection with the death of Cayden Lasseter. Canum was living with Lasseter's mother at the time and was the only adult home the night the child's fatal injuries were sustained.

Police said Canum's explanation for what happened did not match the child's injuries. The death appeared to be a case of shaken baby syndrome.

Canum was convicted by a jury in March.
