SALT LAKE CITY — Harmons grocery store and customers raised $222,653 for Special Olympics Utah.

The grocery store held fundraising activities in all of its 16 locations in March, including encouraging customer donations at check stands and allowing Special Olympics athletes to sell root beer floats at stores on the weekends.

Harmons also donated 5 percent of its frozen food net sales sold for the month.

This year’s effort topped 2011’s event by $20,000, a 10 percent increase.

Harmons is the top sponsor for the charity, which presents athletic events and educational programs for people with intellectual disabilities in Utah.
