SALT LAKE CITY — Two men were hospitalized Thursday after a stabbing outside a Smith's Marketplace.
The stabbing occurred in the store's parking lot at 400 South and 500 East around 5:30 p.m.
"What we know from the witness is that the suspect went in and bought a knife," said Salt Lake City Police Lt. Brian Pervies.
The man then went outside, and there was a confrontation, and two men were stabbed, Pervies said. A witness said the injured men ran into the store, alerting a customer inside with a concealed firearm. The man with the firearm went outside, drew his pistol and held the man at gunpoint until police arrived.
Pervies said authorities are unsure why the confrontation occurred. Pervies said it did not seem like the man with the knife knew the victims. Names of the victims have not yet been released. The victims were hospitalized with serious injuries, and a witness said one man was stabbed in the side of the head and the other in the abdomen.
The name of the alleged assailant was not released pending his being booked into the Salt Lake County Jail, Pervies said.
