Rivalry games seem to bring out the best in teams and players. Tuesday’s game between the Stansbury Stallions and the Tooele Buffaloes was no different.

In a game that Stansbury trailed 1-0 at half, the Stallions were able to grab the 2-1 win after Armando Herrera scored a clutch goal from 20 yards out in the second half of overtime. Josh Gallegos scored Stansbury’s other goal, while Collin Beckstead scored the lone goal for Tooele.

Stansbury came out sluggish in the first half, losing many possessions. Tooele was able to control the tempo of a very physical game.

“I think that we came in a little cockier than we should’ve,” Herrera said.

Although they had many great opportunities in the second half, they were not able to capitalize until late.

Zach Sharp crossed in one of his several corner kicks on the day, and Gallegos finished it off with the goal to tie the game at one apiece.

Just after assisting on the tying goal, Sharp had a breakaway chance, and was taken to the ground by a player from Tooele inside the penalty box. No call was issued, and amongst the craziness and confusion, Gallegos earned a red card.

In the first half of overtime, Jara Eshete had a chance to put it away for the Stallions, but hit the post. Ethan Babcock followed it up, but also missed, this time wide left. The game headed to a second half of overtime.

About halfway into the second half of overtime, Herrera broke through the Tooele defense and fired a shot from 20 yards out. He buried it into the top right corner of the net, and the Stallions rushed the field to celebrate the victory over their stunned rivals.

“It feels pretty good," said Herrera. "Although I think we should’ve finished it earlier in the game, it was good to put it away at the end. It took us about a whole game to wake up, but we did and we came away with the victory.”

With the win, the Stallions snap a three game losing streak and move to 5-7 overall and 5-5 in Region 11.

The Stallions will travel to Morgan Friday to face the Trojans. Tooele drops to 1-12 overall and 1-9 in Region 11. The Buffaloes will be back in action on Friday as they host the Grantsville Cowboys.
