OREM – After helping Utah Valley University's school-record win streak reach 19 games last week, Goose Kallunki was named by Collegiate Baseball as one of "Louisville Slugger's" National Players of the Week.
Kallunki and Adam Gunn also helped the Wolverines sweep the Great West Conference weekly awards, the league office announced on Monday.
The duo led UVU to a four-game sweep of Texas-Pan American in a match-up of the only two remaining unbeaten teams in the Great West. It's the second time that both players have received the conference award this season.
Kallunki, a senior from Orem, Utah, powered the Wolverines' offense last week against UTPA with a .529 average, 1.353 slugging percentage and had three home runs, 11 RBIs and six runs scored to earn the offensive player of the week award.
The first baseman had the second multi-homer game of his career in the series opener. He leads the GWC in several categories including home runs (10), RBIs (51) and hits (60). Kallunki currently ranks second in the nation in RBIs with UVU, as a team, leading the nation in team batting (.343) and slugging (.515). He also leads Utah Valley with a .395 batting average.
Gunn, a junior from Santa Clara, Utah, pitched 6 1/3 scoreless innings in a 7-0 win in the second of a four-game series against the Broncs. The righthander struck out five batters while scattering five hits in the combined shutout. It was the first time that UTPA has been shut out this season. Gunn is 3-0 with a 0.00 ERA in Great West play so far this season.
The Wolverines (26-11, 12-0 GWC) return to action on Thursday against NJIT in a four-game GWC series. The Highlanders are 9-3 in league play and sit in second place. UVU also hosts BYU next Tuesday at 6 p.m.
