LOGAN — Plagued by minor injuries and illnesses, the Utah State men’s tennis team fell 7-0 to Western Athletic Conference foe Hawaii Saturday at the Logan Sports Academy and Racquet Club.

With the loss, the Aggies fell to 4-11 overall and 0-3 in WAC matches. The Warriors improved to 6-11 overall and 3-1 in league play.

Things got off to rough start with the USU team getting swept in doubles play. Agie junior Sven Poslusny and freshman Marcus Fritz were taken down by Hawaii’s Jonathan Brooklyn and Dmytro Kovalyov (8-5), while USU sophomore Andrew Whiting and his brother, junior Lenny Whiting fell to Charlie Rice and Chas Okamoto(8-6). Utah State senior Nate Ballam and freshman Matt Sweet wrapped up doubles action falling to Nils Schuhmann and Danilo Casanova (8-6).

Moving to singles competition, Poslusny led the team from the No. 1 position, but was taken down by Brooklyn through a super tie-breaker (7-5, 3-6, 10-7), while Fritz fell to Kovalyov (6-0, 6-1).

With Sweet out with a wrist injury, Lenny Whiting moved up to the No. 3 position. He fell to Schuhmann (6-0, 6-1), while freshman Curran Wearmouth was defeated by Jared Spiker (6-2, 6-3). Playing in just his second match of the spring season, sophomore Brandon Nielsen wrapped up the match falling to Casanova (6-0, 6-3).

The Aggie men will wrap up their regular season this week with three matches. They will play at in-state rival Weber State on Tuesday, with action getting started at 10 a.m. MT.
