SALT LAKE CITY — The Division of Consumer Protection and Utah Department of Health issued a warning Thursday to Utah consumers about possible scams that may come via text, phone or email after the recent Medicaid data breach.

While no victims have reported formal complaints, the agencies hope to thwart any fraudulent schemes by alerting the public.

Last week the UDOH announced that the personal records of thousands of state Medicaid patients had been breached by hackers, who had illegally gained access to sensitive, private information. The hacked data included social security numbers, addresses and birthdates.

The executive director of the Utah Department of Commerce said consumers should know that government agencies would never ask for personal information over the phone, by text or by email.

“We ask that all Utahns remain alert and ever vigilant against these scams which may target anyone, even those whose information was not part of the original security breach," said Francine Giani.

The main concern is the protection of clients, said David Patton, executive director of the Utah Department of Health.

“We're hopeful that by alerting them to all the possible situations associated with the Medicaid data breach, we can help them avoid compromising their sensitive information further," he said.

UDOH and the state Department of Technology Services have indicated that no representative from either agency will be contacting Utah consumers to ask for personal or account information. Consumers are reminded to never give out personal account information, social security numbers or other identifying information to strangers.
