HOLLADAY — A Murray woman involved in a fatal car crash that claimed the life of her cousin has been charged with negligent homicide.

Laura Ruth Blocker, 18, is charged with negligent homicide, a class A misdemeanor, for the Nov. 18, 2011, accident.

Blocker was driving on Wasatch Boulevard near 5700 South about 4:30 a.m. when she lost control of her Chevy Malibu and the vehicle rolled several times. The car came to rest on its hood and immediately burst into flames.

Blocker was able to get out of the car. But her cousin, 19-year-old Kellie McElroy, who was in the passenger seat, did not.

Blocker later told investigators she was driving "approximately 100 mph when she started to let off the gas pedal, and then she lost control of the vehicle, and crashed," according to the charges.

The speed limit for that section of road is 50 mph.

A summons for Blocker was issued and she was "booked and released" from the Salt Lake County Jail on Wednesday. Her next court hearing is scheduled for May 14.
