SPRINGVILLE — Police in Utah County are investigating two separate armed robberies at local tanning salons that happened about an hour apart from each other Wednesday.

The first, at Springville's Gold N' Glow Tanning, 1190 N. Main, took place just after 8 p.m., Springville Police Lt. Dave Caron said. A man entered the tanning salon and demanded money from employees and customers before fleeing on foot.

Caron said officers responded and searched the area but were unable to locate the man. No one was injured in the incident where the man took a "small amount of money," police said.

About an hour later, a similar robbery occurred at a tanning salon in Provo. Provo Police Sgt. Mathew Siufanua reported that it was just after 9 p.m. when a man walked into Waikiki Beach at 2255 N. University Parkway with a small handgun.

The man fired one round into the air before demanding money from employees. Siufanua said no one was injured and that there were no customers in the store.

No one was injured in that incident, either. The took money before fleeing westbound on foot, again evading officers.

"We had a ton of officers in the area looking for him," Siufanua said. "We canvassed the offices and neighborhoods but didn't find him."

The person described in both robberies is a male wearing a ski mask with a thin-to-medium build, between 5 feet 6 inches tall and 5 feet 10 inches tall.

Siufanua said the suspect descriptions appear to match, and officers assume the man has a vehicle he used to get from Springville to Provo.

"This suspect has been very active," Siufanua said. "A lot of the description (Springville police) gave matched our guy. We consider him armed and dangerous."

Those with information about the incidents have been asked to call Provo police at 801-852-6210.
