Delta and Payson head coaches meet during the pregame.

PAYSON—Coming from back-to-back losses, the Payson Lions sweep the Delta Rabbits with a 13-1 win.

Starting for the Lions was senior Kolton Brost with a record of 2-0 coming into Tuesday’s game. For the Rabbits, senior Austin Albers started with a 1-0 record.

The beginning of the game seemed to be a pitcher’s duel with Brost throwing three strikeouts and Albers allowing only two hits the first two innings.

Delta’s Barr hit the first run of the day, while Payson quickly matched with a single by Anderson in the second.

The game was stretched out of reach by the Lions with Brost hitting a two-run home run to give the Lions a 3-1 lead.

“We look for Brost to be in those key positions. He always seems to come up big when we need him the most,” said senior shortstop, Tanner Newbold.

“I believe that there is no better hitter than Brost in the state. He comes up big for us and he shows great leadership to the other players,” said Shaun Johnson, Payson's head coach.

Coming back from an ankle injury, Newbold started his first game of the season, seemingly unaffected by his noticeably swollen ankle. Newbold hit a double following Brost’s home run.

The Lions capped a 10-run inning with a triple from Brost, sending in one more run to add to his three RBI game.

The Lions defense stepped up in the fourth and fifth innings, only allowing two hits.

Brost finished his game with six strikeouts, picking up his third win of the season.

Payson picking up their eighth victory of the season, already surpassing last year’s win total of five.

“We have played 10 really good games this year. Our kids have stepped up and they are playing really well right now,” said Johnson.

The Lions raise their record to 8-5 while the Delta Rabbits drop to 2-7. Both teams play again in Delta on Thursday.
