IRVINE, Calif. — Utah State's men and women's track and field teams captured three event titles as part of 10 Top 6 finishes on Friday during Day 1 of UC Irvine's Spring Break Collegiate Invitational at Anteater Stadium.
Winning their respective event for USU were seniors Lindsey Spencer in the hammer throw (59.56m, 195-05), Daniel Howell in the 3,000m steeplechase (9:04.37) and sophomore Kyle McKenna in the 5000m (14:42.53).
"The thing we want to do is be consistent each week," said Aggie head coach Gregg Gensel. "With the throwers, they either set personal-best marks, improved, or stayed consistent with their throws last week, which is a great thing. Our distance runners also did extremely well, as they always do, with some fast times."
Senior Kim Quinn placed third in the 5000m (17:19.04), while sophomore Hannah Williams clocked in with the 10th-fastest time in Aggie history (10:59.92) to collect sixth place in the 3,000m steeplechase. Freshman Melanie Heslop rounded out the top six for the USU women as she placed fifth in the hammer throw with a toss of 51.63m (169-05).
For the Utah State men, senior Nick Bolinder and freshman Chris Martinez finished in fourth and sixth places in the 5000m with times of 14:46.97 and 15:18.13. Senior Aaron Clements tabbed second place in the 3000m steeplechase (9:11.51), while sophomore Bryce Hall threw a personal-best 56.58m (185-07) in the hammer throw to take home fourth place.
Saturday's action will begin at 11:30 a.m. with the women's javelin and is set to conclude with the men's 4x400m relay at 5:50 p.m. All times are subject to change. Live results are available for fans to follow each event on www.utahstateaggies.com.
Following the Spring Break Collegiate Invitational, USU will continue the 2012 outdoor season at New Mexico's Tailwind Invitational in Albuquerque, N.M. on April 6-7. The Aggies' will host their lone home meet of the season, the Mark Faldmo Invitational, on April 21 at the Ralph Maughan Track Stadium.
