There may be unclaimed money waiting that you don’t even know about.
The National Association of Unclaimed Property reports that there is about $32 billion in unclaimed property held by states, according to SavingsAccounts.com.
Companies that owe consumers money will turn over unclaimed funds to the state if they are unable to find the person it goes to.
This money can be found at websites for individual state unclaimed property offices or a website called MissingMoney.com, which allows users to search all states for lost funds.
Unclaimed property often happens when people move and forget to collect a refundable utility or rent deposit. It also can occur if consumers forget to notify organizations of a name change following a marriage or divorce.
Some companies will offer service fees for finding missing money, according to the SavingsAccount.com article. This is unnecessary because the information is available to the public for free.
