The brakes on Adam Goodsell's truck failed on Friday in Sardine Canyon.

OGDEN — A Cache County man injured in an automobile accident after buying an engagement ring in Salt Lake City died Sunday.

Adam Goodsell, 32, was ejected from his vehicle when it crashed on U.S. 89 near Wellsville on March 9. In a call he placed to 911 just before the crash, Goodsell reported that his brakes had failed and his gas pedal was stuck.

The man was not wearing a seat belt when his vehicle left the roadway, ejecting him. He was hospitalized for nine days with various head injuries, but his family remained optimistic.

In a Facebook posting on the "Support Adam Goodsell" website, his family wrote: "Thank you all for the love, support and prayers. Adam has returned to his Heavenly Father and mother. Rest In peace, Adam! You will always be in our hearts. We love you and are grateful to have had you in our lives."

The message was posted about 1 p.m. Sunday.

Goodsell crashed while reportedly driving home to Providence from a trip to Salt Lake City, where he had bought an engagement ring. Goodsell's family, describing it as "the right thing to do" and "what Adam would have wanted," performed an informal ceremony with the ring in Goodsell's hospital room.

The man's girlfriend accepted the ring in the hope Goodsell would wake up and be able to propose himself.

Police are still investigating the cause of the vehicle's malfunction, though a preliminary report confirmed that brake failure played a role in the crash.
