SALT LAKE CITY — An arrest warrant has been issued for a 18-year-old Sandy man charged with assaulting a 7-Eleven clerk with a baseball bat during a robbery.
Otulangi Roger Fotuaika is charged with first-degree felony aggravated robbery for the April 23, 2011 crime when he entered the 7-Eleven store at 4110 S. Redwood Rd. in Taylorsville and told an employee, "Open the register, or I will kill you," court documents state.
The employee grabbed a metal baseball bat kept in the store for protection, and the two struggled to control the bat, charging documents state. During the struggle, Fotuaika allegedly struck the employee several times with the bat and with his fists.
Eventually, the clerk opened the cash register drawer and fled the store. Surveillance video shows Fotuaika taking cash from the drawer and putting it in his pocket, then fleeing out the back door, according to court documents.
A customer who witnessed the struggle blocked the door with his vehicle and pounded on the window in an attempt to stop the defendant.
DNA testing conducted by the Utah Bureau of Forensic Services found DNA on the bat that matches the DNA profile of Fotuaika, according to charges.
