TEMPE, Ariz. — Jordy Hart drove in five runs with two, two-out triples and scored three runs, sparking Utah Valley University (6-9) to a 9-6 upset win over No. 11 Arizona State (11-5) on Wednesday night at Packard Stadium.
All nine Wolverine runs came after there were two outs in an inning beginning with the second when Hart tripled to left with the bases loaded. Jake Rickenbach then drove Hart in with a base hit to right, giving UVU a 4-0 lead.
"We were focused and really played the way we want to play. It was two completely different games from last night to tonight," said head coach Eric Madsen. "Jordy was unbelievable. He really came through. We've talked about getting two-out hits a lot this year and tonight that was the difference in the game."
UVU starter Jeremy Gendlek kept the Sun Devils hitless through 4 2/3 innings before Trever Allen singled and Nathaniel Causey got ASU on the board with a line shot over the wall in right.
The Wolverines — and Hart — answered in the top of the sixth. The freshman tripled again — this time to right — to score two more and then crossed the plate himself on a throwing error to give UVU a 7-2 lead.
Arizona State came back with four in the sixth to make it a one-run game. In the frame, Joey DeMichele had a two-run single and scored on a double by Rouric Bridgewater.
Josh Swenson retired seven of the last eight hitters he faced to seal the win and pick up the save. Gendlek, the reigning Great West Conference Pitcher of the Week, improved to 2-3 with the win while Damon Gillies (0-2) took the loss.
It's the Wolverines' third win over a ranked opponent in the school's NCAA DI era and the second over Arizona State. Utah Valley also defeated then 17th-ranked Arizona State on May 4, 2005, by an identical 9-6 score.
UVU is scheduled to play a three-game series at Saint Mary's beginning Friday in Moraga, Calif. The forecast calls for rain all weekend but the games are schedule for 4 p.m. MT on Friday and 2 p.m. MT on both Saturday and Sunday.
