Utah Highway Patrol troopers investigate a fatal accident on I-215 near 1300 South in Salt Lake City Wednesday, March 7, 2012.

SALT LAKE CITY — A 13-year-old girl was killed Wednesday when the car she was riding in crashed into a cement barricade on I-215, police said.

The single-vehicle accident occurred at 3:12 p.m. near 1300 South. Two northbound lanes were blocked by the accident for three and a half hours.

Utah Highway Patrol reported that the vehicle was traveling the speed limit and veered right, striking a power box and camera post on the passenger side. The vehicle then traveled back toward the roadway and into a road sign, ending up on top of the concrete barrier.

The girl, Chelsea Pearson, of Taylorsville, was killed as a result of the accident.

Police say the girl's brother, Joshua Pearson, 17, was driving the car. He did not sustain serious injuries but was transported to Intermountain Medical Center. Police report drugs or alcohol were not a factor in the accident.
