A westbound car ran a light and collided with a TRAX train, knocking it off the tracks at 500 S. Main Street Wednesday, March 7, 2012, in Salt Lake City.

SALT LAKE CITY — A TRAX train collided with a vehicle Wednesday in front of the federal courthouse near 500 S. Main.

The accident happened about 10:15 a.m. A woman was driving west on 500 South and apparently didn't see the red light at Main Street, said Salt Lake Police Sgt. Josh Ashdown. The woman ran the light and was struck on the driver's side by a TRAX train approaching the next platform.

The woman suffered minor injuries and a teenage boy in the passenger seat was not hurt, Ashdown said.

"She was very very fortunate she didn't get hurt badly," he said.

The impact of the collision caused the TRAX train to derail. Ashdown said westbound 500 South was closed at State Street and Main Street was closed from 400 South to 600 South while crews cleaned up the accident. He said commuters should expect the closure to last a couple of hours.

Utah Transit Authority told commuters to expect delays on all downtown TRAX lines.

The woman was cited for running a red light.
