MOAB — Investigators have released the name of a Colorado man killed by an avalanche while snowmobiling over the weekend.
Garrett Carothers, 18, of Redvale, Colo., was snowmobiling with three family members and friends in the Beaver Basin area of the LaSal Mountains on Saturday when the slide was triggered.
Carothers' body was found Sunday buried in about 12 feet of snow, approximately 5 feet from where his snowmobile was found.
More than 50 members of the Mesa County, Colo., and Grand County search and rescue teams assisted in locating Carothers and digging his body out.
A candlelight vigil was held for Garrett at Norwood High School in Colorado on Sunday. On his Facebook page, Carothers listed dirt bikes as one of his hobbies and spoke often in his posts about snowmobiling.
