LAS VEGAS — The Utah Valley University men's and women's track teams opened the 2012 outdoor season at the UNLV Classic and brought home eight first-places finishes Friday and Saturday.
Aleina Eisenhauer-Winger, who is coming off a great indoor season, led the Wolverines with a pair of first-place finishes in the 1500m (4:34.93) and the 5000m (17:34.38).
Lance Merrel (1st, high jump, 6-0 3/4), Dew Clarke (1st, 400m hurdles, 56.17), Chris Dorton (1st, 800 meters, 1:53.59), Tim Rowberry (1st, 1500m, 3:56.00), Trevor Sharp (1st, 5000m, 15:14.60), and Ivie Gonsalves (1st, 3000m steeplechase, 11:27.38) all netted top finishes.
In addition, the Wolverines brought home 10 second-place finishes.
Aaron Best had a pair of second-place finishes in the discus (140-05) and the shot put (49-07.75).
In other second-place finishes: Ali Shields (triple jump, 36-02); Autumn Robertson (high jump, 5-05); Zandrea Nelson (200m, 24.61); Kelli Roach (javelin, 131-03); Ryan Hudson (400m hurdles, 56.63); Angela Baker (5000m, 17:40.57); Mike Felix (5000m, 15:23.48); Kalina Zufelt-Clegg (3000m steeplechase, 12:08.94).
In other notable performances: Spencer Evensen (3rd, 5000m, 15:37.46); Spencer Foster (4th, 5000m, 15:47.98); Maryn Pincock (4th discus, 144-07); Makira Rackham (4th, high jump, 5-05); Becca Hutton (4th, hammer, 152-00); 4 x 400 men's relay (Taylor Asay, Jacob Brydson, Rowberry, Skylar Burningham, 3rd, 3:21.53); 4 x 400 women's relay (Nelson, Rebecca Brown-Renshaw; Lexie Esplin, Chelsea Baker-Nelson, 3rd, 3:49.28); Asay (4th, 400m dash, 50.64); Jordan Nelson (3rd, 110m hurdles, 15.77); Macy Butterfield, 1500m, 4:01.34); 4 x 100 women's relay (Nelson, Baker-Nelson, Brown-Renshaw, Anna Yeboah, 3rd, 46.43); Josh Cook (4th, long jump, 21-11 3/4); Alexandra Lundberg (4th, pole vault, 9-6 1/4); Mark Jones (4th, javelin, 181-09) and Nelson Orton (3rd, 3000m steeplechase, 10:52.67).
The Wolverines are back in action March 15-17 at San Diego State.
