SALT LAKE CITY — Salt Lake County Councilwoman Jani Iwamoto has announced she will not seek a second term.

Iwamoto is one of four Democrats and the only woman on the nine-member council, unseating Republican Mark Crockett in 2008. Crockett is currently a candidate for Salt Lake County mayor.

"With a great deal of thought, as well as discussion with family, friends and colleagues, I have decided not to seek re-election," Iwamoto said in a statement released on Tuesday.

"I have some immediate priorities that need to be addressed; and although I have had so much support, I do not feel I can give the effort necessary to run a campaign and to attend to my present duties on the council. This decision-making process has made me realize how much I care about this county and its constituency. Representing constituents has been my highest priority and greatest privilege," she said.
