NAPERVILLE, Ill. — After seven strong innings in Sunday's 6-1 win at Nevada, Utah Valley University junior Adam Gunn received the Great West Conference's first pitcher of the week award for the 2012 season. Bradley Brown of Houston Baptist was named the player of the week.

The honors were announced Monday by the conference office.

Gunn led the Wolverines to a win in the series final in Reno, Nev. on Sunday with five strikeouts, scattering four hits while allowing one run — none earned — in seven complete innings. He also struck out six batters in a mid-week matchup at No. 8 Arizona last week.

"He came in and put a great start together at Nevada and really never let them get any momentum going," said UVU head coach Eric Madsen. "He just did a nice job of eliminating any opportunity they may have had and was able to control the game."

He went 1-0 last week in two appearances with a 2.45 earned-run-average and struck out 11 batters in 11.0 innings of work.

Utah Valley will face its second ranked opponent in as many weeks when the Wolverines face national power and 15th-ranked Cal State Fullerton in a three-game series this weekend. The series begins Friday at 8 p.m. and can be heard live on 960 AM the Zone and
