Fewer Americans used employer-based health insurance in 2011 compared with 2010, a drop which is part of a decline that has lasted since 2008, according to a Gallup poll.

The number of people who obtained health insurance from an employer dropped to 44.6 percent in 2011 from 45.8 percent in 2010. Compared with 2008, this is a 4.6 percentage-point drop.

The number of uninsured Americans has risen to 17.1 percent from 16.4 percent in 2010, which is a 2.3 percentage-point jump from 14.8 percent in 2008.

A majority of nongovernment employees are still getting health insurance through employers, 57.1 percent using employer-based plans. But that number has dropped from 64.2 percent in 2008.
