Authorities believe two small fires in the Skull Valley area were intentionally set Monday evening.

Both fires were reported at about 11:30 p.m. and started next to the highway, said J.R. Davis, dispatcher for the Interagency Fire Center. "We're pretty sure they were intentionally set," Davis said, adding that investigators would be on the scene Tuesday.Area residents helped crews with four engines from the Bureau of Land Management and the Dugway Fire Department put the fires out. Each burned about one-quarter acre, Davis said.

Up to 40 firefighters battled a 160-acre blaze about 16 miles south of Fruitland that was controlled at 2 p.m. Monday, said Helen Frazier, Uintah Basin Fire Center dispatcher. That fire was started by lightning Saturday afternoon and caused no damage to structures.
