A Utah man drowned in Lake Superior Friday night after his boat became tangled in a Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources net and capsized.

Fabian G. Benedict, 60, 3183 Pearce, West Valley City, was found under water by divers about 200 yards off shore. He was tangled in the net used to trap fish that are tagged for future study. His wife, Maxine Benedict, 56, survived the accident after swimming ashore with the aid of a life preserver. The victim was not wearing a life jacket.

A search began for the man at 6:40 p.m. after his wife told a nearby resident about the accident. The Bayfield County Sheriff's department, Washburn police department, the U.S. Coast Guard and the Civil Air Patrol participated in the search.

A police spokesman said it appeared the accident occurred when the boat's propeller became entangled in the net, causing the craft to capsize. Benedict was taken to Washburn Marina where paramedics tried to revive him. He was then taken by ambulance to Memorial Medical Center in Ashland where he was pronounced dead at 11:20 p.m. Mrs. Benedict was treated at the hospital and released.
