Writer-producer Bryce Zabel has been elected chairman and chief executive officer of the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences. Zabel will succeed Meryl Marshall-Daniels in October. He was chosen to lead the academy by its governors and executive committee members in voting earlier this week.

Zabel, whose credits include "Dark Skies" and the TV version of "The Crow," defeated Jeff Cole, director of UCLA's Center for Communication Policy, for the position.

Among the issues Zabel will face are renegotiation of the Emmy Awards broadcast rights and possible talks about reunification with the East Coast television academy.
