It's a homecoming for Mike Runge.
Runge, a local radio personality, was introduced as the Salt Lake Golden Eagles' general manager at a Monday afternoon press conference. The move became necessary when Mark Amicone resigned the GM post recently to take a job at the University of Utah.Runge already has close ties with the Eagles. He has been their public address announcer since 1971 and from 1974 to 1976 was the team's promotion and sales director. Through the Eagles he met and married Mary Geurts, the team's first receptionist.
After leaving the Eagles in '76, Runge went to the airwaves as a broadcaster and operations manager while working in numerous PA assignments - he has done it on a regular basis not only for the Golden Eagles but for the Salt lake Trappers and University of Utah football, basketball and gymnastics. He also has pinch hit for Don Roberts, when the Jazz announcer couldn't make a game. Then there are the various exhibition he's done, ranging from professional wrestling to tennis to volleyball.
He's been nicknamed "Microphone Mike" because of his busy schedule. In an interview with Deseret News Sports Editor Lee Benson, he talked about why he enjoys such a busy schedule.
"I'm type A, high type A. We go to Hawaii," he says, "everybody else is kicking back and soaking up the sun; I'm in the ocean looking for shells."
