A critical examination of Josef Stalin's role in the Bolshevik revolution written by a retired Michigan State University professor is about to become the first Western book of history published in the Soviet Union. Under a contract signed Friday night in Boston, 50,000 copies of Robert Slusser's "Stalin in October" will be printed by the Soviet government publishing house Novosty Press. American scholars said the agreement is a significant development in the glasnost policy of Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev and creates hope for an increased exchange of ideas between East and West.
