Kathy Garcia was named Ms. Wheelchair Utah 1989 Saturday, ending a three-day pageant that included interviews with judges, entertainment and workshops.
A panel of judges rated contestants on their accomplishments since onset of disability, advocacy efforts, education and communication skills.The title holder will represent all disabled Utahns in an advocacy role and will be Utah's representative at the Miss Wheelchair America Pageant next summer in Puerto Rico.
Garcia contracted polio as a young child. She is a lead patient representative at Sugar House InstaCare and hopes to become a nurse.
Kathy Coston, Salt Lake City, was selected as the first attendant. She is an office manager and PBX operator.
Susan Barnhill, Salt Lake City, training coordinator of the Bureau of Land Management, is the second attendant.
Special awards were presented to two contestants. Tricia Post, Logan, received the Pushing Forward Toward Excellence Award.
Linda Decker, Salt Lake City, received the Candid and Caring Award. Coston was selected as Ms. Congeniality by the other contestants.
Dixie Mitchell, the outgoing Ms. Wheelchair Utah, will represent the state in the national competition in Mobile, Ala., in August.
Randall Carlisle, KUTV-TV, served as emcee of the pageant for the sixth consecutive year. The Ms. Wheelchair Utah Pageant is now in its 14th year.
