Groundbreaking ceremonies for Little Dell Dam have been scheduled for 10:30 a.m. July 11 at the construction site in Parleys Canyon, just north of Mountain Dell Reservoir.

Work on a contract to relocate roads around the dam site began more than a year ago, and excavation crews are now working on a $900,000 core trenching and test-filling contract. The Army Corps of Engineers has asked Congress for $7.8 million in construction funds for the coming year.

Little Dell was originally proposed in 1956 at an estimated cost of $8 million for an 8,000 acre-foot reservoir. The dam project now under construction would impound 20,000 acre-feet of water and carries a price estimate of $46 million, $7.35 million of which will be paid by Salt Lake County and $13.02 million by the Metropolitan Water District of Salt Lake City.
