The Metropolitan Club, the last major men-only club for Washington's elite, has followed in the tracks of the Cosmos Club and voted to accept women as members, its president said Saturday.
John D.H. Kane said the vote by the club's 15-member governing board was taken Wednesday and members were notified by letters that arrived in the District of Columbia on Saturday."We thought it was an idea whose time had come," Kane said. "The board made a policy change to accept ladies in membership for all categories."
The vote was taken just four days after Washington's private Cosmos Club voted to accept a woman and two days after the Supreme Court upheld a New York City law aimed at requiring the admission of women to big, private clubs where important business dealings often occur.
Kane refused to discuss any specifics of the vote or the procedures for acceptance into the exclusive 2,200-member club. He said the club's decision to admit women was not based on the Cosmos Club precedent or other pressures.
