The University of Utah Graduate School of Social Work is sponsoring a free drug and alcohol prevention conference Friday and Saturday.
Denise Gottfredson, of the Center for Social Organization of Schools, Johns Hopkins University, will be the keynote speaker. Gottfredson will discuss new methods for preventing adolescent drug and alcohol use.Gottfredson is the founder of Positive Action Through Holistic Education, a substance abuse prevention program. Its purpose is to reduce youth drug and alcohol abuse by altering school organizations and involving business, community and school leaders.
Unlike many drug and alcohol conferences, the U. program centers on self-help solutions, such as wilderness trips, parent/teen relationships, crisis hot lines, peer leadership and creativity and talent recognition.
The conference is sponsored by the Utah State Office of Education, Davis School District and the U., and is open to the public. Registration is at 7:30 a.m. at the Graduate School of Social Work.
