A landslide Tuesday in the south China province of Jiangxi killed 17 people, left 17 missing and seriously injured 34, the People's Daily of Beijing said Thursday. Torrential rain caused 80,000 cubic yards of earth and stone to fall on a small village, demolishing or burying 59 houses, the daily said. The local geology department had warned of such a landslide, enabling some families to leave before it happened, but the slide occurred earlier than forecast because of the rain.
