The Seattle Mariners, quickly sinking into oblivion in the American League West division, will look for their third manager of the 1988 season, club president Church Armtrong has announced. The Mariners dropped their ninth straight Tuesday, 6-0 to the Texas Rangers.
Jim Snyder was named interim manager two weeks ago after Dick Williams was fired as manager. The team won its first two games after Snyder became manager, and an active search for a permanent replacement was put on hold. But the team went to 3-3 and then lost eight straight. Through Tuesday, the Mariners have scored only 10 runs in the first eight games of their current road trip. The Seattle Times said the list of prospects for a new manager might be down to three - New York Yankee coach Jeff Torborg, San Diego Padre coach Jeff Riddoch and Oakland Athletic coach Jim Lefebvre. Minnesota Twins third base coach Rick Renick acknowledged Tuesday that he had talked with Mariners general manager Dick Balderson about a week ago.
