Robert V. Stevens, president of the certified public accounting firm of Tanner & Co., has been named the outstanding CPA for 1988 by the Utah Association of Certified Public Accountants. The honor came Wednesday during the group's annual convention in Park City.

Stevens is the eighth association member to receive this award presented to a member who has "demonstrated superior professional competence and provided exemplary leadership through prominent association positions."Dr. Jay M. Smith Jr., a professor of accounting at Brigham Young University since 1971, was named outstanding educator for his "active involvement in the accounting profession and superior performance and demonstrated high ideals."

Smith has been a visiting professor at the University of Hawaii, an associate professor at the University of Minnesota and chairman of the Accounting Department and a visiting assistant professor of economics at Stanford University.

Mary Kay Griffin, an officer and shareholder in the accounting firm of Foote, Passey, Griffin & Co. where she specializes in tax and small business, was named the outstanding committee chairperson for her contributions to the association's Membership Committee.
