Huan Huan, the giant panda at the Tokyo zoo, gave birth early Thursday, and mother and baby were doing well, zoo officials said.
The 15-year-old Huan Huan became pregnant through artificial insemination in March after two unsuccessful attempts to conceive with her mate, Fei Fei, the officials said.
It was the third baby born to Huan Huan in three years. Huan Huan gave birth to Chu Chu in 1985 but the baby, a male, lived only two days. The second baby, Dong Dong, was 2 years old this month.
