Mike Atencio, West Jordan, is the latest winner of the Leonard W. McDonald Commitment to Excellence Award.
Atencio is a probation supervisor with the 2nd District Juvenile Court and is described by one co-worker as honest, fair, supportive, diligent and sensitive.
The monthly award, sponsored by the Utah Public Employees' Association, was established to recognize courtesy, integrity, loyalty, pride in a job well done and all the qualities that distinguish public service as a profession and an art. The honor consists of a certificate and a $50 savings bond.
Atencio is a 16-year veteran of the court and has been a supervisor since 1975. He has a broad background in intake as well as probation. Co-workers say he is conscientious, thorough and highly professional in all aspects of his work.
"He is not above rolling up his shirt sleeves to assist with a clerical task," said his nominator. Atencio is also credited with improving the Salt Lake Unit facility by installing the sprinkler system, lawn and air conditioner - much of which was done on his own time.
