A Salt Lake man was in serious condition at a Colorado hospital Saturday night after he fell 30 to 40 feet during a rock climbing expedition near Moab, an official said.

John Acomb, 41, was in the intensive care unit at St. Mary's Hospital in Grand Junction with multiple trauma injuries, a hospital spokeswoman said.

Acomb and some companions were rappelling Friday morning in Kane Creek, 8 1/2 miles southwest of Moab, when Acomb fell from the cliff, the Grand County Sheriff's official said.

He was taken from the accident scene to near Moab in his companion's vehicle and met by an ambulance, which took him to Allen Memorial Hospital in Moab. Acomb was then flown by helicopter to Grand Junction, the official said.

Acomb, who suffered severe leg and head injuries, was an experienced climber and investigators had not yet determined Saturday the exact cause of the mishap, the official said.
