U.S. District Judge David Sam placed a Salt Lake woman on probation for five years and ordered her to pay more than $10,000 in back taxes, interest and penalties on her guilty plea to filing a false tax return.

Sam also ordered Karen Anne Shields, 31, to perform 100 hours of community service and file all her federal tax returns in a timely manner.

In exchange for Shields' guilty plea to one count of filing a false claim with the Internal Revenue Service, federal prosecutors agreed to dismiss a second count.

Shields admitted filing a 1983 federal income return claiming a $1,300 tax refund she was not due, prosecutors said.
