Joan Campbell, head women's basketball coach at Weber State College, on Friday announced her resignation to accept an assistant coaching position at the University of Minnesota.

Campbell, 35, joined Weber State in 1986 from Bemidji State in Minnesota. During her first year, the Lady Wildcats posted an 11-16 overall record, advanced to the post-season Mountain West Athletic Conference tournament and tied for third in conference rankings.

The Lady Wildcats had their best conference start ever that year with a 7-1 record in the first half of conference play, but lost four starters due to graduation.

After a marathon recruiting season brought in 10 new players, including seven freshmen, the Lady Wildcats had a 7-20 record in 1987-88 in a rebuilding year that saw only one returning starter on the squad.

"I have enjoyed working with both athletic and college personnel the past two years as well as the many good people of Ogden," Campbell said.

"I appreciate the experiences that have been afforded me at Weber State, but will look forward to coaching in the Big Ten and meeting new challenges at that level of play," she said.

Applications for the position of head women's basketball coach will be accepted by the Weber State Athletic Department after July 1.

Mountain West and the Big Sky Conference are merging on July 1.
