Playing hookey could carry a high price tag for Utah schoolchildren.
The State Board of Education on Friday set a fee schedule, as directed by the Legislature. The first unexcused absence would result in a warning without a fee. After that, the fee would increase $5 daily, starting at $10 and working up to $25 if the pattern continued.Local school districts will have the option of adopting the fee schedule.
The fee program should be secondary to effective intervention in a student's truancy problems, said Ken Revis, who developed the fines schedule.
Parents would be notified in any instance in which a fine was to be levied for truancy.
