Teachers from nine school districts spent a day learning how to use a newspaper to teach children. Deseret News Teacher Workshops were held in Orem, Farmington and Murray this week, drawing 130 teachers. Seven teachers and four newspaper specialists gave workshops on newspapers in the classroom. Teachers learned that newspapers can be used to teach math, English, history and current affairs. They discovered ways to use newspapers to enhance holidays and even learned how to use the comic page to get youngsters enthused about learning. They also learned that newspapers can help motivate reluctant readers. A seminar on newspapers and the environment will be held in August.
