SALT LAKE CITY — New arrival Josh Nurse has been awarded a scholarship. He’s also switching positions, going from wide receiver to safety. The Utes usually have seven safeties on scholarship but had just four before moving Nurse from the deep pool of receivers to defense.

Other moves include junior Alani Havili-Katoa switching from defensive line to offensive line and sophomore Jake Jackson going from linebacker to tight end.

Senior Troy McCormick, meanwhile, is seeing action at both running back and receiver.

EXTRA POINTS: Utah coach Kyle Whittingham said the team will probably choose captains on Wednesday and make an announcement Thursday . . . A decision on a first-string kicker is expected to be made this week. Freshman Chayden Johnston and former UVU soccer star Matt Gay are the finalists . . . Junior college transfer Tareke Lewis, a defensive back, will use his redshirt year and enroll at Utah in January. Wide receiver Derrick Vickers, who is also finishing up academic work, faces a deadline of Friday to join the Utes.
