Kelsey Brunner,
Newcomer Quarterback Austin Kafentzis checks his line before the start of a play during the BYU Cougars' first practice of the season in Provo on Thursday, July 27, 2017.

PROVO — Transfer Austin Kafentzis isn't playing at quarterback currently — the position he starred at while at Jordan High — but he is making an impact elsewhere. The 6-foot-1, 195-pound sophomore has being seeing reps at both receiver and running back during practices, performing well.

"He has a natural feel for running the ball," Sitake said. "... He's our athlete and we're just trying to find a place for him. I just think he can help us win games, so we as a coaching staff is just trying to be creative."

Kafentzis may switch back to quarterback after this season.

VAKA AND TONGA WELCOME ADDITIONS: JUCO transfer John Vaka has been cleared and is practicing with the team. The 6-foot-5, 275-pound lineman is currently practicing on the offensive line, although Sitake mentioned he could switch over to defense.

Khyiris Tonga has also been cleared, with Sitake saying, "I think he'll be a factor for us in the first game." Tonga is a 6-foot-4, 300-pound true freshman defensive lineman from Granger High.
