We go recruiting and we have to tell recruits that he won the Heisman because he never mentions it. That’s who Ty is. I don’t think he really cares if you know if he’s smart or not but I’m telling you that he is. —Kalani Sitake on offensive coordinator Ty Detmer

When asked about what it’s like working with Ty Detmer, BYU football coach Kalani Sitake praised his offensive coordinator’s knowledge and demeanor.

“Ty Detmer is really smart. People don’t appreciate how smart he is because he doesn’t really care if you know,” Sitake said. “As a head coach, I’ve been around a lot of people and that guy knows football. He knows offense.

"Some of the things he’s able to do are brilliant. I appreciate him being about the team first and not being about him. He’s never about himself. We go recruiting and we have to tell recruits that he won the Heisman because he never mentions it. That’s who Ty is. I don’t think he really cares if you know if he’s smart or not but I’m telling you that he is.”

BACKUP QUARTERBACKS: Detmer has a bevy of quarterbacks at his disposal behind starter. Tanner Mangum.

Beau Hoge, Koy Detmer Jr., Austin Kafentzis, Kody Wilstead and Joe Critchlow are listed as the QBs on the roster. However, Detmer said at media day that Kafentzis, a transfer from Wisconsin and Arizona Western, could be playing running back or wide receiver once fall camp begins.
