Brigham Young Cougars linebacker Sione Takitaki (16) tackles Cincinnati Bearcats running back Tion Green (7) during a football game at the LaVell Edwards Stadium in Provo Friday, Oct. 16, 2015.

Defensive lineman Sione Takitaki, who did not play last season, is listed as a possible starter on the projected depth chart.

“He’s more ready than I’ve ever seen him. He looks great in the workouts,” said linebacker Fred Warner. “He’s been working his tail off and he’s had more motivation than he’s ever had because of what’s happened — being in and out of the program. He’s learned from his mistakes and he’s ready to get after it and show everybody what he can do.”

Midway through his sophomore year in 2015, Takitaki was suspended for the rest of the season and hasn’t played since.

In 17 games at BYU in 2014 and 2015, he recorded 40 tackles, 11 tackles-for-loss, 6.5 sacks, one forced fumble, two fumble recoveries and five quarterback hurries.

WHY NO. 12?: Junior quarterback Tanner Mangum was asked during media day why he wears No. 12.

“I wore No. 11 in high school. I just liked it. When I got to BYU, Terenn Houk was already No. 11,” he explained. “So I had to think about the number I wanted to be. It’s no secret that I’m a big Tom Brady fan, a big Patriots fan. I go with 12 and try to play like Tom. People always ask me, ‘Does it have to do with Tom Brady?’ Yeah, it kind of does. I like it. I’ve thought about wearing No. 12 for one year but after I wore 12, it stuck.”
