Deseret News sportswriter Dirk Facer and Salt Lake Bees radio broadcaster Steve Klauke were honored Wednesday by National Sports Media Association.

SALT LAKE CITY — Deseret News sportswriter Dirk Facer and Salt Lake Bees radio broadcaster Steve Klauke were honored Wednesday by National Sports Media Association. Facer was named 2016 Utah Sportswriter of the Year, and Klauke was named 2016 Utah Sportscaster of the Year.

Facer is in his 23rd year at the News, covering everything from high school sports to the NBA Finals in 1997 and 1998. He has been the University of Utah beat writer since 2003. This is the fifth time he has received this award.

Klauke is entering his 24th season as the voice of baseball in Salt Lake, having been the radio broadcaster for 3,340 games for the franchise since its inception as the Salt Lake Buzz in 1994. During the baseball offseason Klauke is the voice of Weber State athletics, calling football and mens basketball games on the radio for the Wildcats. In 2016, Klauke was called-up by the Los Angeles Angels to fill in for Terry Smith on the Angels radio broadcast for six games.The award is the third of Klaukes career.
