PROVO — Thursday night marked the first time the BYU Cougars had ever welcomed the No. 1 team in the country to the Marriott Center.

Despite a valiant effort in the second half, the Cougars fell, 85-75.

Numbers• Gonzaga shot 52 percent in the first half compared to just 32 percent for BYU, and the road team led 42-26 at the break.

• The Cougars cut their deficit to 76-70 with 2:05 remaining but couldn't quite get over the hump.

Records: BYU 16-8; Gonzaga 23-0


Gonzaga: Guard Nigel Williams-Goss led all scorers with 33 points.

Team: T.J. Haws scored 29 points for the Cougars.
